Governors' Camp in the Masai Mara

The Masai Mara National Reserve is the celebrated heart of Kenya's safari circuit, an immense ecosystem defined by its sweeping grasslands and the life-giving Mara River.

Governors' Camp occupies a historic site within a protected riverine forest, holding a commanding position along a prominent bend of the river.

This specific location was originally reserved for the colonial governors of Kenya, a testament to its superlative wildlife viewing potential, a legacy the camp has upheld since its founding in 1972.

Strategic Location and Wildlife Viewing at Governors' Camp

The camp’s key logistical advantage is its setting deep inside the National Reserve, which removes any transit time to reach the most productive game-viewing areas. Situated approximately 280 kilometres from Nairobi, the camp is best accessed via a 45-minute flight to the nearby Musiara Airstrip.

The main tents overlook the Mara River at a point that is a permanent residence for hippo pods and basking crocodiles. Opposite the camp, open plains attract large herds of buffalo, elephant, and plains game. During the Great Migration season, typically from July to October, this river frontage becomes a potential stage for dramatic wildebeest and zebra crossings.

The camp’s guides use its proximity to several well-known crossing points to strategically position vehicles with minimal travel, based on real-time reports of herd movements.

Classic Safari Tents at Governors' Camp

Governors' Camp delivers a traditional safari experience, with accommodation under canvas allowing guests to fully immerse themselves in the sounds of the African wilderness.

The tents are pitched on solid concrete bases within the forest, offering a blend of rustic charm and essential comfort. This design maximises both privacy and the auditory experience, from the nightly calls of hyenas to the deep grunting of hippos in the adjacent river.

Classic Guest Tents

The camp features 37 guest tents, which can be arranged with double or twin beds. Each tent includes a private en-suite bathroom equipped with a hot-water shower, a single basin vanity, and a flushing toilet.

At the front, a private verandah provides a quiet space to observe the river or the plains. The amenities inside are functional, catering to the practical needs of modern travellers while maintaining the classic safari atmosphere.

  • 240v UK-style plug sockets for charging cameras and electronic devices
  • Bedside lamps and main tent lighting
  • Gas and paraffin lamps provided in the evening for ambiance
  • An in-room safe for storing passports and valuables
  • Dedicated luggage racks and storage space

Spacious Family Tents

For larger groups, family units are available. These are created by joining two standard tents via a shared, expansive verandah.

This intelligent configuration allows families to stay close together while retaining two separate sleeping areas and two full en-suite bathrooms, making it an ideal solution for multi-generational safaris or those travelling with older children.

Central Mess Tents and Camp Services

The communal heart of the camp consists of a dedicated bar tent and a separate dining tent, both positioned to offer uninterrupted views across the Mara River. The bar serves as the social hub for evening drinks, its canvas walls adorned with historical photographs that chronicle the camp's distinguished past.

Dining is a refined, seated affair with set menus that change daily, often served al fresco, weather permitting. The camp runs on a hybrid system of solar power with a generator for backup, providing a reliable 24-hour electricity supply.

WiFi is available but is limited to the reception and bar areas, a deliberate policy to encourage guests to disconnect and engage with the natural environment from their tents.

Navigating the Unfenced Camp Environment

Governors' Camp is an entirely unfenced property, which allows wildlife to wander freely through the grounds. This creates an authentic and thrilling wilderness experience but requires the observance of strict safety protocols.

Guests are not permitted to walk between their tents and the main area after dark without an escort from a Maasai askari, or guard. These highly experienced guards are on call throughout the night to ensure safe passage for all guests.

This escort system is a standard and effective operational procedure for all high-end, unfenced camps in the Mara ecosystem.
