Kibo Safari Camp

Tier Mid-Range
Type Tented Camp

Amboseli National Park's ecosystem is one of stark contrasts, dominated by arid, dusty plains fed by underground springs from Mount Kilimanjaro's distant ice cap. This water creates unexpected green swamps, attracting the park's famous elephant herds.

Kibo Safari Camp is situated on the park's eastern periphery, a location chosen for its clear, unobstructed view of Kilimanjaro's summit just across the Tanzanian border. The camp is approximately 280 kilometres south of Nairobi, often accessed via the Kimana Gate.

Tented Accommodation at Kibo Safari Camp

The camp offers a classic safari experience through its 73 permanent tents. These structures provide a greater degree of comfort and security than a mobile camp, with solid foundations that insulate against the region's cool evening temperatures. The tents are arranged in a gentle arc, ensuring most units have a clear line of sight to the mountain.

Canvas Tent Design and In-Room Amenities

Each tent features heavy-duty canvas walls set beneath a traditional thatched roof, a design that naturally regulates the internal temperature. The floors are finished with polished local wood, and the entrance opens onto a private stone-paved verandah.

The verandah of each tent is specifically oriented towards Mount Kilimanjaro, offering a private vantage point for the clear light of dawn and dusk. Furnishings, including the beds, writing desks and luggage racks, are crafted from local bush logs to maintain a rustic and functional safari aesthetic.

An en-suite bathroom is integrated into the rear of each tent. The facilities include a flush toilet, a washbasin with running water and a dedicated shower cubicle. A central system, linked to the camp's generator schedule, provides hot water.

The Central Lodge and Guest Facilities

The main communal areas are housed within a large, open-plan building designed to maximise natural airflow and provide continuous views of the surrounding environment.

The architecture combines local stone masonry with heavy timber beams and a high-pitched thatched roof, creating a spacious and welcoming central hub for guests.

Open-Air Restaurant and Lounge Bar

The primary dining area is open-sided, creating an al fresco atmosphere while remaining under cover. The kitchen serves meals buffet-style, presenting a combination of international dishes and local Kenyan cuisine.

An adjacent lounge area provides comfortable seating arranged for socialising or quiet relaxation. This space also contains the main bar and is the primary access point for the camp's Wi-Fi signal.

The Kilimanjaro-View Swimming Pool and Gallery

The camp's large outdoor swimming pool is a central feature, located on the main lawn between the lounge and the mountain view. A paved sun terrace with sun loungers surrounds the pool, offering a necessary retreat from the midday heat of the Amboseli plains.

The property also includes a small art gallery and gift shop which stocks local crafts, safari clothing and essential items.

Practical Information and Camp Operations

Kibo Safari Camp operates self-sufficiently within a remote environment. Its infrastructure is built for reliability, though guests should be aware of certain operational logistics that are standard for a bush camp of this nature.

Generator Schedule and Internet Access

A diesel generator supplies all electrical power throughout the camp. To conserve fuel and minimise noise, the generator runs on a fixed schedule, typically in the early morning for breakfast preparations and again from late afternoon into the evening.

This schedule is confirmed with guests upon check-in, and it is the only time to charge electronic devices. Wi-Fi connectivity is available but is limited to the main lounge and reception areas and does not extend to the individual guest tents.

Guest Safety and Perimeter Fencing

An electric fence protects the entire perimeter of Kibo Safari Camp. This important security measure prevents large wildlife from entering the camp grounds, ensuring guest safety when walking between tents and the central facilities, especially after dark. A team of security guards also patrols the grounds throughout the night.
