Samburu Simba Lodge

Tier Mid-Range
Type Safari Lodge

The arid, acacia-dotted landscapes of Samburu National Reserve are defined by the life-giving Ewaso Nyiro River, which sustains a unique collection of wildlife. Samburu Simba Lodge occupies a prime position on a wide, elevated bank, overlooking a significant bend in this river.

This location provides an expansive vantage point for observing game activity along the watercourse, including species unique to the region such as the Grevy's zebra and reticulated giraffe.

Architectural Style and Layout of Samburu Simba Lodge

The lodge is a substantial, permanent structure built from local stone, timber, and traditional thatch roofing. It comprises a series of accommodation blocks and a central public building, all connected by paved pathways.

Its functional design accommodates a larger number of guests than a typical bush camp. The main building is open-sided, a design engineered to maximise airflow and provide uninterrupted views of the river and the reserve beyond.

Guest Rooms and Suites at Samburu Simba Lodge

Samburu Simba Lodge provides guest accommodation in over seventy rooms, which are organised into several multi-level blocks that extend along the riverbank.

The solid construction offers a secure and comfortable environment, a contrast to the canvas walls of a traditional tented camp. Every room is angled to take advantage of the river views, with a private balcony serving as a personal observation point.

Guest Room Features

Rooms are available in twin, double, or triple configurations to suit different group sizes. The stone and plaster construction helps insulate against the midday heat, maintaining a cool interior. Key features of each room include:

  • En-suite bathroom with a walk-in shower
  • Private balcony with a table and chairs
  • Mosquito netting suspended over the beds
  • A small writing desk and chair for personal use

Central Lodge Facilities at Samburu Simba Lodge

The central lodge building serves as the main hub, housing the primary guest facilities. This area acts as the social and operational heart of the property, featuring a high, thatched ceiling that promotes a sense of space and offers a cool retreat from the equatorial sun.

Dining and Observation Deck

The main restaurant and an adjacent bar are situated within the open-plan central building. The restaurant typically serves meals buffet-style, offering a wide range of international and local dishes.

Above the bar, an elevated observation deck provides an excellent vantage point for wildlife viewing. Guests commonly observe elephant herds, waterbuck, and crocodiles in or near the Ewaso Nyiro River directly from this deck or the dining terrace.

Swimming Pool

Samburu Simba Lodge includes a large, well-maintained swimming pool. The pool is located a short distance from the main building and is surrounded by a stone patio with sun loungers. The pool's position offers panoramic views across the reserve, allowing for wildlife observation while swimming.

Practical Information for Guests at Samburu Simba Lodge

The remote location of the lodge, approximately 325 kilometres from Nairobi, necessitates specific operational protocols. Guests should be aware of the arrangements for power, connectivity, and personal safety during their stay.

Power and Connectivity

An on-site generator supplies electrical power on a fixed schedule. Power is usually available in the early mornings from 05:00 to 09:00 and again in the evenings from 18:00 to 23:00.

This is sufficient for charging camera batteries and other devices, but charging is not possible overnight. Wi-Fi is available but restricted to the main lounge and reception areas, and its performance can be intermittent.

Wildlife and Security

The lodge remains unfenced, allowing wildlife, including elephants and baboons, to roam freely through the grounds. This arrangement enhances the safari experience but requires guests to exercise caution.

After dark, it is mandatory for guests to be escorted to and from their rooms by lodge askaris for their safety.

Why Samburu Simba Lodge is Recommended for Families

Samburu Simba Lodge is particularly suitable for families and first-time safari travellers. This recommendation is based on two key factors: the large swimming pool provides a superb activity for children and a welcome relief from the afternoon heat, while the solid construction of the rooms offers a greater sense of security than a canvas tent.

The high probability of viewing large game, especially elephants, directly from the lodge's central areas makes it a reliable and accessible introduction to the Kenyan safari.
