Route Overview and Logistical Pacing
This 3-day safari from the Kenyan coast is designed for concentrated wildlife viewing with minimal driving time. The itinerary follows a logical loop from Mombasa to the vast plains of Tsavo East before moving to Taita Hills Sanctuary. This route avoids the long overland journeys required to reach parks like Amboseli or the Maasai Mara from a coastal starting point.
The pacing is efficient and focuses on time spent viewing wildlife:
- Day 1: Mombasa to Tsavo East (Approx. 2-3 hours drive). This allows for a late morning arrival in the park, leaving the full afternoon for a game drive.
- Day 2: Tsavo East to Taita Hills (Approx. 1.5 hours drive). A short transfer between parks means you can have game drives in two different ecosystems on the same day.
- Day 3: Taita Hills to Mombasa (Approx. 3-4 hours drive). The longest drive is on the final day, scheduled after a morning game drive for a direct return to your coastal hotel or the airport.
Wildlife Expectations and Seasonality
This tour provides access to two different wildlife viewing environments. The parks complement each other and offer a good range of East African fauna.
- Tsavo East National Park: This semi-arid landscape is known for its large herds of 'red elephants', named for the fine red dust they use for bathing. The park is a reliable location for observing lion, buffalo, giraffe, and zebra. Its open, flat topography provides clear, panoramic sightlines for spotting game.
- Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary (Salt Lick): The main feature here is concentrated game viewing around waterholes, especially the one in front of Salt Lick Game Lodge. This water source attracts a high density of animals, with elephant and buffalo being frequent visitors. The setup allows for excellent viewing from a fixed point, including after dark from the lodge itself.
Accommodation and Vehicle Standards
This is a Mid-range safari, offering a balance of comfort, good location, and value. Accommodation is in established safari lodges or permanent tented camps with en-suite bathroom facilities, full-board meal plans, and dependable service. We select clean, comfortable properties that are well-located for game viewing.
Transport is in a safari-converted minivan with a pop-up roof. These vehicles provide comfortable seating for travel between the parks. During game drives, the roof is raised to create a 360-degree, elevated viewing platform for photography and observation. The minivan is not a 4x4 Land Cruiser but is entirely suitable for the well-maintained road network within Tsavo East and Taita Hills.
UK Traveller Essentials
Practical information for clients travelling from the United Kingdom:
- Visa / Entry Permit: UK passport holders require a Kenya Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA). This is mandatory and must be approved online before departure. The previous eVisa system is no longer in use.
- Power Sockets: Kenya uses the Type G plug, which is the same 3-pin socket used in the UK. Travel adapters are not necessary for your standard devices.
- Luggage: This road safari has no internal flights, so there are no strict luggage weight limits. We strongly recommend soft-sided duffel bags instead of rigid suitcases. Soft bags are more flexible and easier to stow in the vehicle's luggage space.
