Itinerary and Where to Stay
Day 1: Journey to the Lava Fields of Tsavo West
Depart Nairobi at approximately 07:00 AM for the scenic drive south along the Mombasa-Nairobi highway. We will enter Tsavo West National Park via the Mtito Andei gate, arriving at your lodge in time for a settled lunch. This afternoon, we explore the otherworldly Shetani Lava Flow, a vast expanse of folded black rock formed by a recent volcanic eruption. We'll be on the lookout for the park's unique wildlife, including the elusive lesser kudu and gerenuk, amidst the dramatic scenery before returning to the lodge for dinner.
After an early breakfast, our day begins with a visit to the magical Mzima Springs, an oasis of clear water. We will descend into a submerged observatory to watch hippos and crocodiles gliding through the crystal-clear stream. Following this, we enjoy a final game drive as we exit Tsavo West and journey to Amboseli National Park, arriving for a late lunch. This evening, with the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro providing a stunning backdrop, we embark on our first game drive in Amboseli, searching for its famed large elephant herds as the sun sets.
With a full day ahead, we depart after an early breakfast for a morning game drive dedicated to seeking out Amboseli’s legendary ‘Super Tusker’ elephants. We will traverse the vast, dusty plains of the ancient dry lake bed, where mirages shimmer in the heat. For midday, we head towards the life-giving Enkongo Narok and Olokenya swamps for a picnic lunch. The afternoon is spent observing the incredible concentration of animals drawn to these permanent marshes, including buffalo and wildebeest, all under the watchful gaze of Kilimanjaro.
We rise early to enjoy breakfast, hoping for a final, cloud-free view of Mount Kilimanjaro's iconic snow-capped peak at sunrise. Afterwards, we will embark on one last morning game drive, making our way towards the park exit gate for a final opportunity to spot wildlife. We then begin our leisurely return journey towards Nairobi, reflecting on the adventure. The drive concludes as we arrive back in the capital in the early afternoon, where you will be dropped off at your designated hotel or the airport for your onward travel.
This 4-day road safari from Nairobi is planned for logistical efficiency. The tour follows a compact circuit through Kenya's southern parks to allow for more time viewing wildlife and less time in transit. The route runs south to Amboseli for views of Kilimanjaro, then connects to the varied geology of Tsavo West before returning to the capital. This circular journey avoids the repetitive travel of an 'in-and-out' trip.
Day 1: Nairobi to Amboseli National Park (Approx. 4-5 hours)
Day 2: Full day in Amboseli National Park
Day 3: Amboseli to Tsavo West National Park (Approx. 2-3 hours)
Day 4: Tsavo West to Nairobi (Approx. 5-6 hours)
Wildlife Expectations and Seasonality
This itinerary covers two distinct ecosystems, offering a high probability of specific wildlife sightings. Game viewing is best during the dry seasons (June to October and January to March), when vegetation is less dense and animals gather around permanent water sources. Views of Kilimanjaro are typically clearest in the early morning.
Amboseli National Park: Known for high-density populations of elephants, often seen in large breeding herds. The park's swamps, fed by underground runoff from Kilimanjaro, support significant numbers of hippo, buffalo, and water birds. Plains game including wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle are abundant, attracting predators such as lion, cheetah, and spotted hyena.
Tsavo West National Park: The volcanic landscape of hills and rocky outcrops provides excellent cover for leopard. The enclosed Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary offers a reliable opportunity to see the protected black rhino. At Mzima Springs, an underwater viewing hide allows for close observation of hippos and Nile crocodiles.
Accommodation and Vehicle Standards
This is a Mid-Range Safari. Accommodation consists of permanent safari lodges or high-quality tented camps, chosen for their en-suite facilities, reliable service, and proximity to key game-viewing areas. The quality of the safari vehicle is a central part of the tour.
Vehicle Type: 4x4 Toyota Land Cruiser.
Vehicle Specification: This vehicle is specified for its suspension and off-road capability, necessary for navigating the varied terrain of Tsavo West. Each vehicle is equipped with a pop-up roof for panoramic photography and game viewing, with a guaranteed window seat for each passenger.
UK Traveller Essentials
For travellers from the United Kingdom, Kenya is a straightforward destination. Please note the following requirements and recommendations for your trip.
Visa / Entry: All foreign visitors, including UK citizens, are required to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) online in advance of travel. Visas are no longer issued upon arrival and the eTA is mandatory for boarding your flight.
Power & Plugs: Kenya uses the Type G socket. This is the same 3-pin rectangular plug system used in the UK, so travel adapters are not required for your standard electronic devices.
Luggage: Luggage is strictly restricted to soft-sided bags or duffels with a maximum weight of 15kg per person. Hard-shell suitcases are not permitted as they cannot be stored efficiently in the luggage compartment of the safari vehicle.
