Itinerary and Where to Stay
Day 1: Arrive in Nairobi & Safari Briefing
Upon landing at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO), the vibrant energy of Kenya's capital welcomes you. Our representative will greet you in the arrivals hall and provide a private transfer to your city hotel. Settle in and acclimatise to the new surroundings. In the evening, your expert guide will host a comprehensive safari briefing, outlining the incredible journey ahead as you enjoy your first dinner. This session is the perfect opportunity to ask any questions and prepare for the adventure that begins tomorrow morning. Your first night provides a comfortable rest before heading into the wild.
After an early breakfast, your adventure begins with a 07:30 departure from Nairobi. We journey west, descending into the magnificent Great Rift Valley, where we will pause at a viewpoint for breathtaking photographs. Continuing through the town of Narok, we arrive at your Masai Mara lodge in time for a delicious lunch. After settling in, you will embark on your first game drive across the vast plains. This introductory safari offers a thrilling chance to spot iconic wildlife such as elephants, giraffes, and vast herds of zebra against the backdrop of the stunning savannah scenery as the sun begins to set.
Today is dedicated to the spectacular Great Migration. Following an early breakfast, we venture out for a full-day game drive with a packed picnic lunch to maximise our viewing time. Your guide will expertly track the immense herds of wildebeest and zebra as they thunder across the plains. The primary focus will be reaching the banks of the famous Mara River, a critical obstacle in their journey. We will position ourselves at a strategic point, waiting with bated breath for the potential drama of a river crossing, a raw display of nature where Nile crocodiles often lie in wait.
We cross into the famed Mara Triangle, an area renowned for its stunning landscapes and high concentration of predators. This sector of the reserve offers a more exclusive safari experience with fewer vehicles. Our morning will be spent scanning the vast open grasslands, the preferred hunting ground for the swift cheetah. After a scenic picnic lunch overlooking the plains, the afternoon search continues for prides of lions lazing in the shade or the elusive leopard resting in a sausage tree. Your guide will use their expertise to track these magnificent big cats, aiming for an unforgettable wildlife encounter.
After a final game drive in the main reserve, we will transfer to an exclusive private conservancy bordering the Mara. Upon arrival and check-in at your new intimate camp, you will experience a different side of safari. The conservancy rules permit exciting activities not allowed in the national reserve. In the afternoon, embark on an exhilarating guided bush walk, engaging all your senses as you learn to identify tracks and plants. This is followed by an off-road game drive, allowing us to get exceptionally close to wildlife sightings for unparalleled photographic opportunities as the day comes to a close.
We seize the 'golden hour' for one last early morning game drive, a final opportunity to witness the savannah's predators on the move before the heat of the day. The soft morning light offers a magical atmosphere for photography. Afterwards, we return to the lodge for a hearty farewell breakfast. We will then begin our scenic journey back to Nairobi, pausing en route for a relaxing lunch. You can expect to arrive back in the capital city in the late afternoon, where you will be transferred to your hotel, filled with unforgettable memories of your Masai Mara adventure.

Day 7: Depart from Nairobi
Enjoy a final, leisurely breakfast at your Nairobi hotel, savouring the last moments of your Kenyan journey. Depending on your international flight schedule, the morning may offer some time for last-minute souvenir shopping or simply relaxing. At the appropriate time, your driver will meet you for a smooth and timely private transfer to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO). We will ensure you arrive with ample time to check in for your flight home, carrying with you the incredible sights and sounds of the African bush. We wish you a safe onward journey.
Kenyan road safaris are planned for logistical efficiency and to show you diverse ecosystems in a single circuit. This 7-day itinerary is a good example, structured to make the most of your time on game drives and manage travel distances effectively. It is particularly well-suited for the Great Migration period.
Route Overview and Logistical Pacing
This itinerary is designed to break the long drive from Nairobi to the Masai Mara, which can be tiring on shorter tours. By routing via the Great Rift Valley to Lake Nakuru first, we replace a single 6-hour transfer with two more manageable drives and add a distinct wildlife habitat to your trip.
Day 1 (Nairobi to Lake Nakuru): Approximately 3-4 hours driving time, allowing for an afternoon game drive upon arrival.
Day 2 (Lake Nakuru to Masai Mara): Approximately 5-6 hours driving time, positioning you at your Mara lodge or camp for the evening.
Day 7 (Masai Mara to Nairobi): Approximately 5-6 hours, returning you to the capital for your onward travel.
This pacing means you spend less of the day in transit and arrive at each park with plenty of time for game drives.
Wildlife Expectations and Seasonality
This tour is timed for the Great Migration season (typically July to October), focusing on high-density wildlife viewing. The multi-park itinerary provides opportunities to see a broad range of species in their specific environments.
Lake Nakuru National Park: A compact, fenced park known for its high success rate in viewing specific species. Expect to see both black and white rhinoceros, endangered Rothschild's giraffes, buffalo, and waterbuck. Flamingo populations fluctuate with water levels but are often present.
Masai Mara National Reserve: The focal point for witnessing the Great Migration. You will encounter vast herds of wildebeest and zebra across the plains. The reserve has one of Africa's highest concentrations of predators, including lions, leopards, cheetahs, and hyenas. The Mara River is the main location for potential river crossing events. Elephant and buffalo are also common.
Accommodation and Vehicle Standards
This tour uses accommodation and transport of a superior mid-range, or "Comfort," standard. This level is selected for its balance of quality, location, and value.
Accommodation: You will be staying in strategically located safari lodges and tented camps. All properties feature permanent structures with solid flooring, private en-suite bathroom facilities (hot running water, flush toilets), and restaurant/bar areas.
Transport Vehicle: Your safari will be conducted in a 4x4 Toyota Land Cruiser. This vehicle is the industry standard for serious safaris due to its heavy-duty suspension for rough terrain and better height for game viewing. It is fitted with a pop-up roof for panoramic, unobstructed photographic opportunities and guaranteed window seats for all passengers.
UK Traveller Essentials for the 7 Days Masai Mara Great Migration Safari Package
Here is some practical information for travellers from the United Kingdom.
Entry Requirements: UK passport holders require an approved Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) to enter Kenya. This must be applied for online in advance of travel.
Electrical Plugs: Kenya uses the Type G socket, the same 3-pin rectangular plug used in the UK. No travel adapters are necessary for your standard electronic devices.
Luggage: We strictly advise the use of soft-sided bags or duffels with a maximum weight of 15kg per person. Hard-shell suitcases are difficult to pack efficiently into the luggage compartment of safari vehicles.
