Itinerary and Where to Stay
Day 1: Journey to the Masai Mara Reserve
Your safari begins with a 07:30 AM departure from Nairobi, travelling overland towards Kenya's premier wildlife sanctuary. We'll make a memorable stop at the Great Rift Valley Viewpoint for breath-taking photographs of the escarpment. Arriving at your lodge in the heart of the Masai Mara in time for a welcome lunch, you can settle in and absorb the sounds of the bush. In the late afternoon, you will embark on your inaugural game drive across the vast plains, searching for lion prides, elephants, and graceful giraffes as the sun sets, casting a golden glow over the savannah.
After an early breakfast, we depart for a full-day exploration of the reserve's immense plains, a day dedicated to exceptional wildlife viewing. The morning light is perfect for photography as your expert guide tracks prides of lion, herds of elephant, and solitary buffalo in their natural habitat. Enjoy a classic safari picnic lunch served under the shade of an acacia tree. The afternoon is dedicated to exploring the banks of the famed Mara River, home to large pods of hippo and formidable Nile crocodiles basking on the shores. We'll return to the lodge at dusk, filled with incredible sightings.
Following a final breakfast in the Mara, we depart around 08:00 AM on a scenic drive to Lake Nakuru National Park, a gem nestled in the Great Rift Valley. Upon arrival, we'll check into our lodge and enjoy a satisfying lunch with views of the park. This afternoon's game drive is dedicated to the park's remarkable biodiversity. We will explore the dedicated rhino sanctuary, home to both black and white rhino, and drive along the lake's edge to witness the spectacle of flamingo and pelican flocks. Keep an eye out for Rothschild's giraffes before returning for dinner.
After breakfast, a short drive brings us to the freshwaters of Lake Naivasha. We'll immediately embark on a guided boat safari across the lake's shimmering surface, a fantastic opportunity to spot the resident hippo pods and watch majestic African fish eagles as they hunt. Our boat docks at Crescent Island Game Sanctuary, where a unique adventure awaits. You will enjoy a guided walking safari, strolling peacefully amongst herds of giraffe, zebra, and waterbuck. This intimate wildlife experience is truly unforgettable. Afterwards, we will proceed to our lakeside lodge for check-in, lunch, and an evening at leisure.
After a final safari breakfast, we drive to the adjacent Hell's Gate National Park, renowned for its spectacular scenery. Here, you have the unique opportunity to enjoy a guided cycling safari or a nature walk through its dramatic gorges and past towering cliffs. Marvel at the geothermal steam vents rising from the earth's crust as you look for zebra and gazelle. This active morning is followed by a final lunch at the lodge. We then commence our return journey to Nairobi, arriving in the late afternoon for your drop-off at your hotel or the international airport.
Short Kenyan road safaris require efficient planning to maximise time on game drives. This 5-day circuit solves the challenge of the long drive from Nairobi to the Masai Mara by breaking the journey at Lake Nakuru. This creates manageable travel segments, a more comfortable pace, and adds a second, distinct ecosystem to the tour.
We schedule travel for the middle of the day. This timing ensures you arrive at each destination in time for an afternoon game drive.
Nairobi to Lake Nakuru National Park: Approximately 3-4 hours drive time.
Lake Nakuru to Masai Mara National Reserve: Approximately 5-6 hours drive time.
Masai Mara to Nairobi: Approximately 5-6 hours drive time.
Wildlife and Seasonality
This itinerary combines two of Kenya’s most significant wildlife areas, providing a high density and diversity of animals. Each park is known for a different set of key species.
Lake Nakuru National Park: This compact, fenced park is a designated rhinoceros sanctuary and provides some of the most reliable sightings of both black and white rhino in East Africa. It is also a critical habitat for the endangered Rothschild's giraffe. The alkaline lake supports varied birdlife, including, at times, flocks of flamingos.
Masai Mara National Reserve: The Mara is one of the world's most important wildlife conservation areas, known for its high concentration of predators. Expect to see large lion prides, cheetahs, spotted hyenas, and vast herds of plains game. It is an excellent 'Big Five' destination, with strong populations of elephants and Cape buffalo. The Great Migration of wildebeest and zebra is seasonal, typically from July to October. The Mara’s substantial resident wildlife populations ensure excellent viewing year-round.
Accommodation and Vehicles
This tour uses mid-range accommodation, selected for a balance of comfort, value, and an authentic safari atmosphere. You will stay in established safari lodges or permanent tented camps, all with en-suite private bathrooms, full-service restaurants, and secure, scenic locations.
Ground transport and game drives are in a custom-outfitted safari minivan with a pop-up roof. This design gives each passenger a window seat and allows for elevated, panoramic viewing during wildlife encounters. A 4x4 Land Cruiser is available as a bookable upgrade for better performance on rough terrain.
Information for UK Travellers
UK passport holders should note the following practical points for a smooth journey.
Kenyan Entry Requirements: Kenya has an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) system. All UK passport holders must apply and pay for their eTA online before departure.
Electrical Plugs: Power sockets in Kenya are Type G, the same 3-pin rectangular plug system used in the UK. No travel adaptors are needed for your electronic devices.
Luggage: We strongly recommend packing in soft-sided duffel bags instead of hard-shell suitcases. Soft bags are more flexible, making it easier to store luggage and maximise space in the vehicle.
